OIAAF Honors Amemiya For His Contributions to High School Athletics

OIA Athletic Foundation Honors Keith Amemiya

(Thu) April 1, 2010

Edward Jackson (OIA Contributing Writer)

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Athletic Foundation (OIAAF) recognized Keith Amemiya for his eleven years of service as executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association at its annual fundraising dinner held on March 25, 2010.  Under Amemiya's watch, the HHSAA has expanded its reach toward helping high school students around the state develop athletically as well as academically.

Some of Amemiya's accomplishments includes establishing state championships in Girls Wrestling, Air Riflery, Girls Water Polo, Golf, Judo, Cheerleading and the island favorite of Outrigger Canoe Paddling. In addition, Division II state tournaments were created for the popular sports of Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Softball, and Soccer.

Next up for Amemiya is a position with the University of Hawaii Board of Regents as the Executive Administrator and Secretary to the Board where he will be responsible for planning, coordinating and directing the administrative support services for the Board of Regents.

Earlier this year Governor Linda Lingle named Amemiya as a recipient of the Governor’s Innovation Award for his efforts in helping raise more than one million dollars for the Save Our Sport campaign. In 2007 Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman named Amemiya to a newly created sports commission.  Attorney Christopher Chun has been hired to become the new Executive Director of the HHSAA. Chun formerly served as an advisor for the OIA.

In 1998, Amemiya began undertaking many significant moves to build a stronger relationship between the HHSAA and the community of coaches, athletes and fans. He established a Director of Information position to assist with promotional efforts including the establishment of the organization's Web site - Sportshigh.com.

Also in 1998, the first state football championship tournament was held.  Teams from every island are now able to compete for this state crown. In 2003, Amemiya helped arrange the agreement for California football powerhouse De La Salle to travel to Hawaii play Saint Louis. Also, highly ranked Long Beach Poly came along to play Kahuku. The doubleheader drew one of the biggest crowds ever to see prep football at Aloha Stadium.

In 2006, Amemiya helped coordinate and establish Team Aloha, a girls basketball team that travels to the mainland annually for all-star tournaments.

In July, the Amemiya donated $20,000 to the athletic programs of Molokai and Lanai high schools. That helped ensure a full year of athletics for the outlying schools, which have to fly off-island for all league and state-tournament events.  Also, in July he kicked off the highly successful Save Our Sports campaign to assist public high schools in meeting budget shortfalls.

From the implementation of the Division II classification to the creation of state championship in more girls sports to the raising of money to help keep many school’s athletic programs stay afloat, Amemiya has generated much appreciation over the years for his notable achievements. The OIA wishes Amemiya great fortunes in his future life.
