The 2009 Oahu Interscholastic Association football playoffs kick off on Friday, October 16 with a Red Conference matchup between Mililani and Kaimuki. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Trojans’ John Kauinana Stadium. On Saturday, Campbell will play at Kailua at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised by OC 16.
The top three teams from the 10-team field will earn berths to the Division I Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tournament. The OIA championship game will take place on Friday, November 6 at Aloha Stadium.
Mililani (6-2, 4-2) is hoping to regain its competitive spirits after recently losing two straight. In those two games, the Trojans’ defense gave up 95 points causing them to fall from first place in the West Division to fourth. During the Trojans’ first six games, their defense allowed just 44 total points.
Quarterback Trent McKinney and all-purpose player Dalaunte "Taz" Stevenson leads Mililani’s offense which is very effective when running option plays.
Kaimuki has potent offensive players in tailback Chester Sua and QB Eddie Char. Despite a losing record, the Bulldogs (2-6, 2-4) have managed to play competitively in their last four games with victories over Roosevelt and McKinley.
Last season Campbell captured the Division 2 White Division crown and has won three games this campaign in league play. The Sabers’ top player is running back Samson Auguay.
Kailua is a team with a strong winning tradition featuring receiver Corey Lau and tailback Clinton Aina. The Surfriders have won three league games this season.
The victor of the Campbell verses Kailua game plays Leilehua while the winner of the Mililani verses Kaimukí contest battles Kahuku in the quarterfinals next week. Two other quarterfinals games next week involves Castle playing at Waianae (in the same bracket as Kahuku) and Kapolei against Farrington at a site to be determined (in the same bracket as Leilehua).
